The Budget Battle at the MN Capitol

In odd numbered years, the governor and state legislature set the state's budget for the next two years. "It's a lengthy process, but it's one that requires a significant number of hands to craft the final document. In Minnesota's divided government--a DLFer occupies the Governor's Mansion and Republicans control both chambers of the Legislature--
it demands both teamwork and a clash of ideals." writes Ricky Campbell in the Session Daily.

Budgets reflect values and priorities.
So it's no surprise that the budgets from the Senate, House and Governor are miles apart on how the state should spend money and how much money should be returned to taxpayers given the $1.65 billion budget surplus.

Now starts the tough three-way negotiation between the House, Senate and Governor. A conference committee appointed of three to five members from both the House and Senate is created to reconcile the differences between the House and Senate bills.  After the conference committee report is passed by both the House and Senate, it is delivered to Governor Dayton to approve or veto.

The Election Is Over...
        the Results Are In

When the 90th State Legislature convenes on Tuesday, January 3, 2017,
there will be 23 new legislative members. Republicans enlarged their
control of the Minnesota House of Representatives and gained control of
the Minnesota Senate for the first time since 2011-12.

The Legislative Action Coalition (LAC) is looking forward to working with each of our newly elected School Board Members and State Legislators.
We are grateful to all the candidates who ran for elected offices for their commitment and willingness to serve our community.
